Stout maharajas on bejeweled elephants, naked holy men sitting
silently along the roadside, ragged children begging for scraps of
food, maddened zealots attacking one another out of caste hatred or
religious fanaticism—these are the stark, sometimes exotic images
that dominate American and Western ideas about India. On occasion
they provide all that non-Indians know about the history and culture
of this country, the largest on the South Asian subcontinent. Yet
India’s 5,000-year history offers more than stark contrasts between
rich and poor, more than an exotic religiosity set within a rigidly
defined caste hierarchy.
Popular images do not do justice to the vibrant diversity of India’s
long and complex history and culture. From the mysteries of the stillundeciphered
Harappan script to the intricacies of an ancient Sanskritbased
culture, from the grandeur of Mughal tombs and mosques to the
imposing 19th- and 20th-century structures of the British Raj, India
offers a wide and varied look at human life, set within the vast expanse
of the South Asian subcontinent. How people lived, prospered, fought,
and made peace through the five millennia of Indian history and how
the diverse populations of the Indian subcontinent wove together their
different ways of life to create the multidimensional tapestry that is
India today—this is the story that this brief history of India tells.
